By the end of the 12th century, Muslim invaders began to establish authority over Indian territory. Yet the Rajput warriors did not weary of wielding their swords; though diminished, they were never destroyed but survived in various forms. From the invasion of Muhammad bin Qasim to that of Muhammad Ghori, through the periods of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, the East India Company, and even British Crown rule, the Rajput sword never rested.
This book focuses on the struggles of Prithviraj Chauhan, king of the Chauhan dynasty. In the history of Ajmer’s Chauhans, three kings bore the name Prithviraj Chauhan. The first Prithviraj Chauhan reigned over Ajmer and its adjoining regions around 1105 CE. The second ruled over Ajmer, Shakambhari, Thoda (near Jahazpur), Menal (near Chittor), and Hansi (in Punjab) around 1168 CE. The third, who reigned from 1178 to 1192 CE, presided over an extensive empire and is the focus of this book—he is also known in Indian history as Rai Pithora.
