Resumen del Editor

A hilarious and poignant memoir grappling with family, disability, and coming of age in two closets—as a gay man and as a man living with cerebral palsy

Greg Marshall's early years were pretty bizarre. Rewind the VHS tapes and you'll see a lopsided teenager limping across a high school stage, or in a wheelchair after leg surgeries, pondering why he's crushing on half of the Utah Jazz. Add to this home video footage a mom clacking away at her newspaper column between chemos, a dad with ALS, and a cast of foulmouthed siblings. Fast forward the tape and you'll find Marshall happily settled into his life as a gay man only to discover he's been living in another closet his whole life: He has cerebral palsy, a diagnosis that has been kept from him since birth. Here, in the hot mess of it all, lies Greg Marshall's wellspring of wit and wisdom.

Leg is an extraordinarily funny and insightful memoir from a daring new voice. Packed with outrageous stories of a singular childhood, it is also a unique examination of what it means to transform when there are parts of yourself you can't change, a moving portrait of a family in crisis, and a tale of resilience of spirit. In Marshall's deft hands, we see a story both personal and universal—of being young and wanting the world, even when the world doesn't feel like yours to want.

Extraordinary

An amazing story of an extraordinary family, son and early life journey that will make you laugh, cry and wish you could be a part of this honest to a fault, unconditionally loving, slightly crazy family.

Enjoyed the book!

I enjoyed listening. A book that talks about growing up gay in a conservative area, family challenges, sexual discovery all hit home. The added physical challenges and family health challenges added to a remarkable life experience. I share being gay, living for a time as a closeted gay Mormon, spending my college time in Utah. We share some experiences and others were a new view into someone else’s life.

Wonderful Memoir!

I found this story candid, refreshing and entertaining. Greg Marshall tells his story beautifully. I hope he will write more of his story and that I am around long enough to read it!

Excellent memoir! Hilarious and so moving.

I won’t spoil it, but you will laugh out loud and be touched (and a bit jealous because your family will look very boring after you meet this one).

Interesting story. Too graphic.

Certainly an interesting and unique story of a person who grew up with both personal and family challenges ranging from illness to death. But I wasn’t sure why he chose to give such graphic descriptions of every sexual encounter in his life? He really seemed to dwell on his sexual experiences as a gay man and the physicality of it rather than his emotional connections to the people he cared about outside of his family members. I thought this did a disservice to the gay community as it paints gay men as being mostly interested in hooking up rather than real intimacy. Also, who masterbates with their brother? I dunno, I would love one chapter and hate the next.

Relatable

I read this so fast. Maybe because I am also gay and disabled in a similar way. I found myself laughing in places and agreeing wholeheartedly in others. The illnesses of his parents give an interesting relief as he becomes intertwined with their care. No one is untouched by disability which is true to life as well.

Astonishingly Honest

This is the most astonishingly, honest memoir that I have ever read. Greg Marshall does an excellent job of narrating his own incredible, difficult life with humor and insight. I hope he continues to write and share his insight and creativity.

Great read

A memoir that encapsulates many trials and lighthearted moments without feeling too heavy or shallow. Greg does a great job of letting you see and feel the many fascinating parts of his life.
