Eddie made his name as a decorated US Special Forces commander in the First Gulf War then, honored with the U.S. bronze star and the French Legion d'Honneur, followed in his family’s footsteps as a billionaire businessman in Paris, where he was born and had lived until he left for college in Texas. He was recruited by the CIA but demurred, instead offering to be a part-time volunteer agent, which led to most of the adventures of the series.

Lauren tells the story of his years in college, where he met Lauren Adams, who became his wife, moved to Paris with him, and was ultimately murdered by the people who thought he knew the whereabouts of an extremely valuable painting that had been stolen by the Nazis early in World War II. It also introduces Jen Wetzmuller, whom he met and dallied with in Sarasota, Florida, on his way to Paris after college.
