A prim and proper spinster. A deadly lord of the underworld. A scandalous pact…leading to love.

Lady Isla needs a rogue. Lucian Night, the dangerously charming Lord of the London Underworld, is the only one who can help find her long-lost friend. Their deal? A pact that plunges Isla into a world of secrets and intrigue…and an unexpected romance.

But when the sweetly courteous Lord Linwood begins pursuing her with roses and poetry, Isla finds herself torn between two very different men. One offers respectability and gentle affection. The other promises danger, passion, and answers to questions that have haunted her for years.

As Isla navigates the treacherous waters of London society and the shadowy underworld, she begins to suspect that nothing—and no one—is quite what they seem. The closer she gets to finding her lost friend, the more dangerous her world becomes. And the more she realises that some secrets have the power to change everything she thought she knew about love, loyalty, and her own heart.

Prepare for muddles, mayhem, and a wickedly delightful love story filled with mistaken identities, forbidden attractions, sizzling banter, and revelations that will leave you breathless—all in a perfectly sweet and clean Regency romcom.

Ah, it’s been too long since I last read a Sofi Laporte book 🤓. This one is a crazy roller coaster of intrigue and who’s who. As with many of Sofi’s books, it’s lighthearted and with a purposeful air of ridiculousness. The mysteries of Jem Fawe and Lucien Night, coupled with the fast pace and quirky dialogue, left me fully glued to the page. A thoroughly entertaining book!

There was something in the ending that gave me a twinge of disappointment. Not in the outcome or the unveiling (that was good), but… perhaps in the lack of grand gesture? I somehow felt my heart should have melted a bit more than it did… but all good 😊

As a side note, the audiobook narrator is exceptional.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex. There’s some violence, but it’s not excessive. The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is one scene with palm reading, but it’s portrayed as a probable scam. There is no mention of faith or God.

A wild ride!

Sophie Laporte is the best! This book has a very well-constructed story uniting adventure, chivalry and historical romance.

Amazing story

So many twists and turns. I would think the story was going in one direction and then another layer would be added and I had no clue again! A very clever story with very clever characters. The heroine was unique. In the beginning I was lukewarm on her because of her obsession of one person but it all worked well into the plot and I was impressed with the author. I loved it in the end. The story had great flow, dialogue, pacing. The narrator was fantastic again. She's done past titles and I don't mind listening to whatever she narrarates.

loved it!

This was all over the place. It jumps from gypsies to criminals to war office to marriage to clocks to her friend's & brother's romance... It just doesn't track well, even though the heroine's character is nicely created. Yet despite her tenacity & bravery, she still ends up acting foolishly by tiptoeing around the truth with her brother for waaaay too long - and actinglike a doormat.

Problem with the story, as I see it, is that it is not clear who the heck the actual hero is. Trying to be "clever" undermined the ability for the reader to root for a hero or for the mutual romance. I felt frustrated from about halfway through & annoyed that it still wasn't clear. That's not a mystery; it's just a sketchy plot. 2-1/2 hrs left and I'm still not sure about the romance or the mystery. And I'm not sure I care. She is a ninny, he is wicked (not in a nice way), & none of them are worth rooting for - the brother is a terrible brother, her friend is barely a friend, & her childhood friend isn't part of the story (more like a ghost). None of the emotional arcs even made sense. The characters' never had logical emotional responses & bounced all over never saying out loud what the emotions demanded.

Thus the HEA is not worth it either. Very disappointing. In fact, it was angering. They should've paid harder for not pursuing heroine, loving her, & respecting her. Everyone used the heroine for their own selfishness & peppered her with forgive-me platitudes. They all lied to her & she played for a fool & pawn, which made the reader not really respecther either. Noone in the book seemed to actually "love" her. These so-called family members & friends & "loves" were terrible people.

The listeners who rated this story with 5 stars are suspect. Not one person in this book is worthwhile & the story plot is wholly unfocused. Don't waste a credit. Two other books in this series are much better, one being excellent. Buy them.
