A Cyprus Memoir An insightful and philosophical memoir about coming of age in colonial Cyprus, reminiscent of Bitter Lemons. This book’s twenty biographical essays describe what it was like to grow up as an outsider in Cyprus during the difficult years of the EOKA uprising against British colonial rule. Born in the US, Harry A. Mavromatis moved to Cyprus with his parents and spent his adolescence on this Mediterranean island. LOST EDENS provides informative, insightful biographies of several of the island’s important personalities, including Archbishop Makarios, as well as of some of the less prominent people the author met and interacted with while there. The volume concludes with perceptive comments about the historical causes of the Cyprus conflict and the author’s hopes for the future. Reviews "A nostalgic flashback to the happier Cyprus of the 1950s, with backdrop the '55-'59 liberation struggle that led to the island's independence and the Turkish invasion. An eloquent narrative written with love for the author's country of origin and filled with interesting information about its traditions and history." Panos Ioannides, author of Gregory and Other Short Stories, president of the PEN International Cyprus Centre. "Harry Mavromatis is a Cypriot American who spent most of his life abroad. Like the Homeric Ulysses, he saw many lands and learned the minds of many people. Lost Edens is a beautifully written book of memories, an outburst of nostalgia, but at the same time a wise account of the tragic fate of Cyprus by a man who can look at things in perspective. It is fascinating reading for Cypriots and non-Cypriots alike." Dr Vassos Karageorghis, Former Director of Antiquities Cyprus, Prof. Em. of Archaeology, University of Cyprus.
