Summer Love. Summer Ball. The summer she almost had it all.

This summer, Kate Kellner is firing on all cylinders. She was offered the chance to play summer softball with the Weatherfield Trailblazers, she’s reconciled with her best friend, Ty, and with Grady by her side, she feels like anything’s possible. But this outlook on life only takes her so far. After all, she can’t just become a new person overnight.

Grady’s looking forward to spending a relaxing and lazy summer with Kate. He plans to work during the day, watch her softball games at night, and spend every available hour left just soaking up the sun and living his best life. The thought of going to college in the fall always lingers at the back of his mind, but he doesn’t let it get him down. He’s making a solid effort to stay positive about everything, especially his fledgling relationship with Kate. But…it’s tough to be the one who always brings the sunshine.

The summer begins well enough, but when Kate realizes that she’s not the best pitcher on her team, she feels the pressure to double down and work even harder than before. Gone are all the carefree thoughts of lounging by the pool with Grady. With their schedules and obligations pulling them in different directions, Kate and Grady get a clear picture of what might be in store for them when he heads off to Felding University. Can they really stay together if they never get to see each other? Is this summer romance doomed to fail?

Katie, the main character, is a softball player who is used to being the top pitcher at school. While on summer break her friend and catcher talks her into joining an under 21 summer league. Not only are they the youngest on the team but Katie is at the bottom of the extensive pitchers line up competing with her idols. She experiences for the first time doubt in her abilities.

That is not the only doubt she experiences. Caught between her best friend Ty, guy next door life long friend, and a newcomer to town her boyfriend Grady who has just graduated high school and is heading off to college. Neither of them likes the other making Katie's life not so pleasant.

Typical teen drama of being caught between childhood and not quite full fledged adulthood fills in the storyline.

I had not realized this was the second book in a series when I first started listening to it. I certainly was aware by the end when there wasn't clear resolutions to issues that the story continues. A positive point was I didn't feel like I was missing out by not knowing what happened before.

The narrator's voice embodies a young adult intonation making it believable that she is Katie verses someone sounding like an old grandmother. I have 2 issues with her performance. 1. She doesn't try to change her voice for the various characters making it hard to differentiate especially between males and females. 2. It was more noticeable the closer to the end that there were not so smoothly recited sentences. Breaks within sentences that weren't natural that made you take a minute to figure out what was being said and meant.
