Bruce the kangaroo stood tall on the ridge overlooking the nursing home grounds, his powerful legs firmly planted in the dry earth. He stretched his neck, scanning the horizon, but his gaze was fixed on the encroaching development. A sprawling housing estate now loomed where the eucalyptus trees used to stand tall, the once thriving bushland now reduced to a small patch of green.
He could remember when this land had belonged to his family—when the entire mob of kangaroos roamed freely. The soft rustle of wind in the gum leaves had been their constant companion, and the sound of human activity was a distant hum, far removed from their peaceful existence. Now, the hammering of construction echoed through the air, and the once wide expanse was blocked by fences, houses, and roads.
The bushland of Bundanoon had been scarred, but it was far from broken. The animals had learned that unity, persistence, and understanding were the most powerful weapons in their fight to protect their home. And though the road ahead was still uncertain, they had proven to themselves—and to the humans—that they weren’t just silent victims of progress. They were part of the land’s history, part of its future.
And as long as there was land to protect, Bruce and his family would be there to defend it
