Jigsaw Feeling

As Ken Burrows sat at his battered desk contemplating the tolling bell of print journalism’s decline and his own imminent retirement, he recalled the mysterious dead man, found at the base of Skimmington’s War Memorial so many years ago. He’d been young, handsome and some mother’s son, and yet, when the police removed his clothing, they discovered that all identifying labels had all been cut away. Found in the man’s pockets was a strange collection of possessions that only served to deepen the mystery, and when the pathologist determined that the man had been poisoned, the story had gone national. The dead man was never identified, nor his murderer caught, but Ken, now with time on his hands, is determination to remit his past failings and solve the riddle.
