The Passover Lamb
The Passover is an historical event occurring in ancient Egypt at the beginning of the Exodus of the Children of Israel about 3,500 years ago. Of the events of this Exodus, the LORD chose the Passover for a memorial. In this feast the children of Israel remembered His Salvation from the Last Plague by the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb. GOD commanded the people to remember it “forever in all their generations.” This salvation of the firstborn by the Blood of the Passover lamb is recorded in Exodus Chapters 11 - 12. The children of Israel were under the yoke of slavery for over four centuries when GOD intervened.
The Sons of Jacob were nomads, moving from one place to another in the land GOD promised to Abraham and his descendants, the land of Canaan. They sojourned in but never owned the land. Canaan was occupied by other tribes, predominant by Philistines, but GOD gave the title to Abraham. In the sojourning period, there was a great famine in the land and GOD allowed Israel to take shelter in the Kingdom of Egypt provided they return to Canaan. When the Patriarch Jacob found there was severe famine in Canaan and his son Joseph was a ruler of Egypt, he decided to migrate to Egypt. GOD allowed him to go down to Egypt and promised to return him to the Land.
I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes. Genesis 41: 4 KJV.
But the Israelite never wanted to leave Egypt after the famine. They settled there by choice; and from honoured guests they were enslaved by the Egyptians. This was not mere physical slavery; it was mental and spiritual bondage. It was a cultural war with the Egyptians which the Israelite lost. Despite their physical hardships they did not want to leave. They became slaves to the lifestyle of the new country.
The children of Israel first had to be redeemed before they could be freed from the burden of their physical slavery. After living in Egypt for centuries, they were at home identifying with the local culture. There, some Israelites were born, lived, and died never seeing the Promised Land. Despite all the hardships, they had no real desire to leave Egypt. All they wanted were civil rights and equality.
