The school and the small town of Bay City is elated with the prospect of a State Championship, but during the holiday break tragedy strikes causing Sonny’s teammates, Jackson High, and Bay City to turn against Sonny. His father was killed by a drunk driver, his grades are suffering and his confidence is low. Sonny’s troubles seem to vanish when Ron Davis, a sophomore student from out of town, moves in next door and they become close friends. Davis is an exceptional football player and encourages Sonny to try out for the team. Soon Sonny and Ron are leading the team to its first ever State Championship. But before the semi-final game, tragedy strikes. Sonny is spurned by his classmates and team members and believes there is no way out.
