Yakushima is an island that floats in the sea off the southernmost tip of the mainland of Kyushu, around 60kilometers south of the coast. 屋久島は、九州本土の最南端から、さらに南方約60kmの沖に浮かびます。
東京23区よりひと回り小さい島ですが、九州最高峰の宮之浦岳がそびえ、屋久島は〝洋上のアルプス〟と呼ばれています。
屋久島は「ひと月に35日雨が降る」と言われるほど、多雨で湿潤な島。大量の雨が、豊かな森を育んでいます。
縄文杉をはじめ、屋久島には樹齢1000年以上の屋久杉の大樹が群生し、独特の美しい景観を生み出しています。
また屋久島では、低地の海岸沿いから、宮之浦岳の山頂に登るまでの間で、日本全土の植生を見ることができます。
