The Ogasawara Islands are located approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo and consist of about 30 large and small islands. 小笠原諸島は、東京から南へ約1000kmの太平洋上に浮かぶ、大小30余りの島々からなります。
そのうち、父島列島や母島列島など5つの区域の群島からなる地域が世界遺産に登録されています。
小笠原諸島は絶海の島々であるだけでなく、これまで一度も大陸と陸続きになったことはありません。
そのため、独自の進化を遂げた固有の動植物たちの楽園となっており、＂東洋のガラパゴス＂とも呼ばれる豊かな生態系を誇ります。
特に、小笠原諸島で有名な生物がカタツムリ。諸島全域では106種のカタツムリの仲間が生息し、そのうちの100種が固有種です。
