Acerca de esta escucha

The New York Times Best-seller: Outgunned and outmanned on the Pacific Ocean, a small American fleet defied the odds and turned the tide of World War II.

On the morning of June 4, 1942, doom sailed on Midway. Hoping to put itself within striking distance of Hawaii and California, the Japanese navy planned an ambush that would obliterate the remnants of the American Pacific fleet. On paper, the Americans had no chance of winning. They had fewer ships, slower fighters, and almost no battle experience. But because their codebreakers knew what was coming, the American navy was able to prepare an ambush of its own.

Over two days of savage battle, American sailors and pilots broke the spine of the Japanese war machine. The United States prevailed against momentous odds; never again did Japan advance. In stunning detail, Walter Lord, the number one New York Times best-selling author of Day of Infamy and A Night to Remember, tells the story of one of the greatest upsets in naval history.

It takes a bit to get in sync with the narrator but once you do the impact of the battle, the personal stories, the irionies and the good and bad luck just kind of overwhelms. An absolute must read for the WW2 Pacific historian.

Definitive work

A very well researched book. The transition to audiobook was poorly executed though. The recording was was very slow. I had to listen to it at 1.3 speed to stay awake. There were a couple of syntax errors that had to be in the script because Mr Lord doesn’t write like that.

Excellent Story

A very in depth look at both sides of the battle with names and timelines. If you study the battle this is a good ref..

The research that went into this book made for a perfect mixture of the large strategic and operation pictures while providing insights into both the tactics used and personal stories on both sides. Frequently providing and switching back and forth between both perspectives (American and Japanese) on the same event can get confusing at times, but if you are able to follow along you will be rewarded with a seeming omniscient understanding of the battle. Norman Dietz’s narration was superb.

Fantastic look at a pivotal battle

I first read this story back in 1970s. very dated now, but was enjoyable, anyhow

a classic, still an authoritative account

Just a classic. Narrator does a great job with pacing & difficult Japanese names. Seemingly objective account. I learned a lot.

Deeply Interesting Account

Would have been more entertaining if it was written as a historical novel. Not so fact driven

Very informative

Title basically sums it up. If you’re familiar with the battle and are an American, it will feed your nationalistic pride while still being true and honest about America’s sloppiness in the battle. Does overstate the underdog status of the US a bit.

A solid, if biased, telling with a poor narrator

Heard stuff not covered in other books. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning about Midway.
