We look at the Bible zoomed out. A bird’s eye view. We roll our eyes at the Israelites for being so stubborn, so forgetful, so unfaithful. We judge David for his adultery. We laugh at Peter’s blunt questions. We frown when all the disciples run away from Gethsemane.

But what might happen if we plant ourselves right there, into those very moments ourselves? Right into the sandals of those people, in the instant those events are happening? What if we feel our own hearts pounding, our breaths catching, our minds racing?

Could it be that our judgment falls away? Even better, might we experience the Bible—and God Himself—in a more intimate way than we ever imagined?

Read each prompt with careful thought. Get out your pen and paper. Then, immerse yourself. Don’t be afraid. Let yourself experience each event as if it is currently happening to you. Describe sensations, sights, smells, sounds, and your immediate feelings. Dare to go places in your mind you’ve never dreamed of. Write several paragraphs—or pages. Or reams. Set your imagination free. Don’t even think about getting judgy. Be real, honest, and raw.
