A month had slipped by. Where had the time gone? Hildie's world had stopped and she wasn't sure what she had even accomplished in the last 30 days. She was barely able to cook, keep house, and stay on top of the wash. Ben was unbelievably understanding and reassured her he loved her and knew she was doing her best under the circumstances.

Hester had been sentenced to three years in jail as long as they didn't find Joy had been killed. Hildie couldn't even think about that possibility and continued to pray that somehow her sweet little angel would be returned to her. Darla, Hester's child, had been sent to the nearest orphanage since no one in town wanted to take care of the extremely spoiled and rude girl she had become. In some ways Hildie felt sorry for Darla because she knew what a rude awakening it would be for her to go into an orphanage. However, if it wasn't for Darla's jealousy over Joy, she would still have her little angel.

Joy continued to study her surroundings each day and realized she needed to eat in order to keep up her strength. She didn't know how or when, but in her mind, she planned to escape. She would watch and wait until her kidnappers were sound asleep and then she would slip away and run with all of her might. She would run and hide so they wouldn't be able to find her. Hopefully she would eventually find someone who could help her return to her parents!
