Acerca de esta escucha
With one diagnosis, editor James Daniels learns that he's literally running out of time. Looking at his life, he sees one regret: Andy, the one that got away. Andy was the first man that James ever loved, but Andy has been gone for years, and might not want to be found.
But as his cancer progresses and James starts to lose his grip on time and memory, it might just be that time and memory are losing their grip on James, too.
It's the biggest and most important re-write of his life. Restoring love from nothing but memory might be possible, if the past isn't too far gone to fix.

Historia
Nick Russo has worked his way from a rough Brooklyn neighborhood to a reporting job at one of the city’s biggest newspapers. But the late 1950s are a hostile time for gay men, and Nick knows that he can’t let anyone into his life. He just never counted on meeting someone as impossible to say no to as Andy. Andy Fleming’s newspaper-tycoon father wants him to take over the family business. Andy, though, has no intention of running the paper. He’s barely able to run his life.

Historia
At 19, Nick is alone for the holidays and facing reality: This is how it will be from now on. Refusing to give up completely, Nick buys a Christmas tree, and then realizes he has no ornaments. A bare tree and an empty apartment aren’t a great start, but a visit from his friend Haruto is just the ticket to get him through this first, worst Christmas. A year later, Nick has realized he’s not the only one with nowhere to go, and he hosts his first “Christmas for the Misfit Toys”. Haruto brings Nick an ornament for Nick’s tree, and a tradition — and a new family — is born.

Historia
Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, has twin problems: literally. It was always his father’s hope that Valentine would marry Miss Arabella Tarleton. But, unfortunately, too many novels at an impressionable age have caused her to grow up...romantic. So romantic that a marriage of convenience will not do and after Valentine’s proposal she flees into the night determined never to set eyes on him again. Arabella’s twin brother, Mr. Bonaventure “Bonny” Tarleton, has also grown up...romantic. And fully expects Valentine to ride out after Arabella.

Historia
Lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer prefers a quiet life. He's happy with his hobbies, his work - and especially with his lodger Rowley Green, who becomes a friend over their long fireside evenings together. If only neat, precise, irresistible Mr. Green were interested in more than friendship. Rowley just wants to be left alone - at least until he meets Clem, with his odd, charming ways and his glorious eyes. Two quiet men, lodging in the same house, coming to an understanding...it could be perfect.

After years of scraping by, Caleb Murphy has graduated from college and is finally getting to start a new life. Except he suddenly has no way to get from Boston to Los Angeles. Then, to add to his misery, there’s perfect, privileged Peter Cabot offering to drive him. Peter Cabot would do pretty much anything to skip out on his father’s presidential campaign, including driving across the country with a classmate who can’t stand him. After all, he’s had plenty of practice with people not liking him much - his own family, for example.

Everything happens for a reason
*waits to be pushed out a window*
I've enjoyed Nathan Burgoine's work for some time, so when I saw he had a story on Audible, I purchased it immediately. I was not disappointed.
I was sure this story would make me ugly cry, it is titled "In Memoriam" after all, but I managed to hold it together. I shouldn't say more than that as I don't want to spoil the story.
My only quibble was with the reader. He gave an excellent performance but the female voices sounded too similar to me.

Excellent
Audio: 3.75⭐️
Lovely, heartbreaking and poignantly real even in its unreality. From the first few sentences, this short gem latched on to my heartstrings and my dark humor bone and had me laughing and tearing up in equal measure. To me, one of the marks of a truly well-written piece with an unreliable narrator and variable timeline is that by the end, you don’t really care about what’s “real” or “true”. All the events, memories etc. are true and false, happened but didn’t - they are the literary equivalent of superposition.

Who Hasn't Wished to Set Things Right?
"In Memoriam" is, simply put, a wonderful and powerful story about a gay man who learns he's dying, has some regrets about how things have gone and ... well. Just listen to it. It's wonderfully written, wonderfully read and just wonderful. If you're wondering about its effect, just wonder at how many times I can use a variation of "wonderful" in this review—and I'm someone who works with words for a living.
