Like a drill sergeant, a third-grade teacher inspects the fingernails of her charges every day that class is in session. It's her brand. Everybody, adult and child, knows it's her thing. Her militant practice instills fear, keeps order, and nurtures lifelong healthy habits. But beneath the surface, darker impulses percolate. In a harrowing confluence of events and circumstances, dirty fingernails play a life-changing role in the paths of a dutiful husband, a schoolyard bully, a keenly observant pupil, a pair of sisters, and a bird watcher.
