What I was truly looking for was something positive and encouraging—a book that would motivate me to stay plant-based, reassure me that this way of eating could support (and even enhance) my athletic performance, and help me feel confident rather than anxious about food choices. My bookshelf was already filled with half-read nutrition books and countless Whole Food Plant-Based cookbooks. Many of them started with good intentions but ultimately felt too dogmatic, too restrictive, or too rooted in fear-based messaging for me to finish.
Evi’s book was the answer to all of my prerequisites—and more.
As someone who has struggled with anorexia and orthorexia in the past, I am very careful about the messages I allow myself to absorb around food. I actively try to avoid belief systems that turn eating into a moral issue or make health feel like a narrow path you can easily “fall off.” What I appreciated most about this book was its humane, flexible, and non-dogmatic approach. Rather than presenting plant-based eating as an all-or-nothing ideology, the author shares her own journey honestly—mistakes, learning curves, and all.
She emphasizes the importance of enjoyment, listening to your body, and adapting a plant-based lifestyle to your own preferences, needs, and physiology. This was incredibly refreshing. Instead of pushing perfection, the book encourages curiosity, self-trust, and sustainability—both physically and mentally.
One of the most helpful parts was her description of what she typically eats during a week. Seeing how simple and realistic her meals were was not only inspiring but also deeply reassuring. It showed me that it’s entirely possible to thrive on a Whole Food Plant-Based diet without obsessing over every bite or constantly worrying about protein and nutrients. For someone trying to move from restriction to food freedom while staying plant-based, this perspective was invaluable.
If I had one complaint, it would be this: the author frequently mentions delicious, satisfying meals she prepared—meals that even impressed omnivores—yet rarely includes the actual recipes. I often found myself wishing she would share more of these in practical detail. Hoping to find them elsewhere, I searched for a website or blog, only to discover that she seems to have no online presence beyond book listings, which was a bit disappointing.
I listened to the audiobook version, which was narrated by a virtual voice. Overall, it did a very good job; a few pronunciations were odd, but they were more amusing than distracting.
All in all, this book felt like a breath of fresh air. It doesn’t preach, scare, or restrict—it supports, reassures, and empowers. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to eat plant-based without fear, rigidity, or obsession, and especially to those who value both physical health and a healthy relationship with food.
