The queen of suspense is back!
Mary Higgins Clark’s new novel - the 30th and most spine-chilling of her long career as America’s most beloved author of suspense fiction - is about the newest and most up-to-date of crimes: identity theft. Who has not read about - or experienced - with a sinking feeling the fear that someone else out there may be using your credit cards, accessing your bank account, even stealing your entire identity.
In I’ll Walk Alone, Alexandra “Zan” Moreland, a gifted, beautiful interior designer on the threshold of a successful Manhattan career, is terrified to discover that somebody is not only using her credit cards and manipulating her financial accounts to bankrupt her and destroy her reputation, but may also be impersonating her in a scheme that may involve the much more brutal crimes of kidnapping and murder. Zan is already haunted by the disappearance of her own son, Matthew, kidnapped in broad daylight two years ago in Central Park - a tragedy that has left her torn between hope and despair.
Now, on what would be Matthew’s fifth birthday, photos surface that seem to show Zan kidnapping her own child, followed by a chain of events that suggests somebody (but who, Zan asks herself desperately, and why?) has stolen her identity.
Hounded by the press, under investigation by the police, attacked by both her angry ex-husband and a vindictive business rival, Zan, wracked by fear and pain and sustained only by her belief, which nobody else shares, that Matthew is still alive, sets out to discover who is behind this cruel hoax.
What she does not realize is that with every step she takes toward the truth, she is putting herself - and those she loves most - in mortal danger from the person who has ingeniously plotted out her destruction.

A favorite author of mine for suspense. What does Jan Maxwell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
My 1st audiobook. It takes some getting used to to stay focused. Having read the book made it a bit easier. I enjoyed her different voices.Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This is an emotional story. What are the ramifications on her son? How can she hold it together under the strain?Any additional comments?

Narrator: 5/5 - I felt like I could actually hear the characters! I could tell each of them apart, and could hear the inflections and emotions like I was actually with them.
Only my need for sleep made me press the pause button. The story was gripping and had me trying to figure out who was behind it till the author revealed it. I listened to the first three hours while playing the PS3. Good thing it was a mindless game because I was concentrating so much on the book that I was falling asleep by the time I realised I'd finished the game some time ago. Luckily it was my day off the next day. I made a point of listening to it while playing another round of that game, washing up, cooking dinner, eating dinner, and finally just sitting and listening to the last hour or so. This was my first MHC book, but it certainly won't be my last! I will also make a point to listen to many Jan Maxwell narrated books.
Tantalising Thriller!

What did you like best about this story?
The suspense.Any additional comments?
I so appreciate MHC stories. Not only are they suspensful and interesting, but also that she does not have to include bad language such as the "f" word on every page or graphic descriptions that some writers today feel they need to insert to sell their books. I know that when I chose a Mary Higgins Clark book, I am going to be entertained and not disgusted. Please keep it up.Another great story from the queen of mystery
