Terzo e ultimo romanzo del ciclo dei moschettieri, "Il visconte di Bragelonne", tra l'epopea e il romanzo picaresco, il dramma e la commedia di costume, si svolge nella Francia 'radiosa' di Luigi XIV. I quattro moschettieri - d'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos e Aramis - ormai avanti negli anni, si ritrovano su sponde diverse, ma il vincolo saldo dell'amicizia non viene meno anche nei momenti di più forte intensità drammatica. Sullo sfondo, intrecciati con le loro vicende, si sviluppano avvenimenti importanti per la storia europea, a cominciare dal perfezionamento dello Stato assoluto in Francia e della restaurazione monarchica in Inghilterra, mentre fioriscono le avventure galanti all'ombra della corte francese e i molteplici amori del Re Sole. È famoso l'episodio della Maschera di Ferro, che si svolge lungo diversi capitoli dell'opera e di cui sono state fatte numerose versioni cinematografiche.
Il primo Tomo di questo romanzo inizia a Blois, alla corte di Gastone d'Orléans, zio del giovane Luigi XIV. La vita di corte in provincia viene scossa dall'arrivo del giovane re, in viaggio verso la Spagna per sposare l'infanta Maria Teresa. D'Artagnan è luogotenente dei moschettieri, il cardinale Mazzarino e la regina Anna d'Austria non hanno mantenuto la promessa di promuoverlo a capitano dei moschettieri, come narrato alla fine del secondo romanzo "Vent'anni dopo". Il principe Carlo Stuart, figlio del decapitato Carlo I, si presenta dal re francese, suo cugino, per chiedere aiuto e recuperare così il trono vacante in Inghilterra. Luigi XIV vorrebbe aiutare il cugino ma Mazzarino si oppone. D'Artagnan, stanco di vegetare al servizio di un re giovane e poco risoluto, decide di lasciare il servizio e si avventura in Inghilterra, con il supporto economico del suo vecchio servitore Plachet, per rapire il generale Monck e consegnarlo al principe Carlo, nella speranza di ricevere una forte ricompensa. Intanto il principe Carlo, deluso per la risposta ricevuta presso la corte francese sta per andare in Olanda, ma sulla strada incontra Athos, che vive vicino a Blois. In ricordo della promessa fatta al padre re Carlo I sul patibolo, Athos promette al principe Carlo di recuperare un tesoro nascosto a Newcastle, dove si reca immediatamente assieme al fedele Grimaud per recuperare il tesoro e contribuire così alla restaurazione del trono inglese. Così i due vecchi amici, D'Artagnan e Athos, si ritrovano, loro malgrado, assieme per portare a compimento la storica impresa: dopo una serie di avventure, il principe Carlo viene infatti insediato sul trono d'Inghilterra, prendendo il titolo di Carlo II. Nel frattempo il cardinale Mazzarino muore e Luigi XIV può finalmente regnare senza intralci sulla Francia. In quel momento il soprintendente Fouquet, uno degli uomini più potenti di Francia, dopo la morte del cardinale Mazzarino, vive in un sontuoso castello a Vaux ed ha una corte piena di artisti e poeti. Colbert, nominato intendente alle finanze da Mazzarino, mortalmente invidioso di Fouquet, cerca subito di mettere il soprintendente in cattiva luce e consiglia re Luigi XIV di prendere una serie di provvedimenti per indebolire la sua influenza. Il re decide quindi di richiamare D'Artagnan in servizio, promettendogli una buona rendita e il grado di capitano dei Moschettieri. La prima missione in incognito di D'Artagnan è quella di verificare se Foquet stia effettivamente fortificando Belle-Île-en-Mer, un'isola in Bretagna posseduta dal sovraintendente.
