Il narratore è il più giovane: Nicola, primo nato a Milano di una famiglia di emigrati pugliesi e primo a laurearsi. È lui che accompagna a Barletta il padre e il nonno per vendere la vecchia casa al mare, che è stata nello stesso tempo il mito che ha unito e l’oggetto ingombrante che ha diviso fratelli genitori e cugini. E mentre racconta degli incontri e dei ricordi, dei luoghi ritrovati e delle delusioni, il suo sguardo, attraverso gli avvenimenti del viaggio, cade sul rapporto del nonno con suo figlio, del nonno con lui e di lui con il padre; ed è uno sguardo a volte sarcastico a volte affettuoso, sempre sospeso tra la drammatizzazione delle piccole cose e la tenace ironia della vita. Il figlio del figlio è una storia che dice dell’impossibilità di capirsi e in ultima analisi del dolore del vivere. Nicola si scopre «illuso di aver studiato e viaggiato per aver di più di un contadino analfabeta, di più di un ragazzo emigrante subito invecchiato»: senza la forza del primo, senza la sofferenza del secondo. Questo è il primo romanzo pubblicato da Marco Balzano (Premio Corrado Alvaro-Opera prima nel 2012) e quello in cui si inaugura una delle poetiche ricorrenti dell’autore, ossia l’emigrazione come forma e simbolo della condizione umana. La sua prosa racchiude qualcosa di schietto e duro, di assolutamente antisentimentale e antiretorico, capace perciò della più coinvolgente autenticità.

Il romanzo di Balzano sorprende per la freschezza dei dialoghi, l’onestà del racconto, la sicurezza dei toni; il suo sembra un piccolo libro d’altri tempi, che potrebbe essere un film tra costume e sentimento, alla Comencini (Luigi), da affidare ai migliori attori di tre generazioni.
