A powerful and emotional debut thriller perfect for fans of It by Stephen King, The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor and the TV show Stranger Things.

SOMETHING IS HIDING IN THE SHADOWS…

We were so young when it all happened. Just 13-years-old, making the most of the long, hot, lazy days of summer, thinking we had the world at our feet. That was us – me, Fat Bobby, Jim and Tara – the four members of the Outsiders’ Club.

The day we found a burnt-out car in the woods was the day everything changed. Cold, hard cash in the front seat and a body in the trunk… it started out as a mystery we were desperate to solve.

Then, the Collector arrived. He knew we had found his secret. And suddenly, our summer of innocence turned into the stuff of nightmares.

Nothing would ever be the same again…

I thought I knew what was in store for me when I downloaded this novel but I was in for a bit of a rollercoaster of a ride. It was a little of a slow burn but a a burn I felt paid off in the climactic end.

I won't spoil the story but contrary to what others have said, I felt this was an engaging story about a 13 year old boy who found himself way overhis head. When he and his friend find blood money i the back of a car, they find themselves between crooks who want it back, and their own childish ambitions with said money.

I found the characters a little cliche but believable. Some complained about the use of certain slurs by the characters and the way they referred to an obese character. But I didn't find them in poor taste but rather reflective of the experiences of teenaged kids. I know from experience. And I think some here found fault with the author not portraying a sanitized world and told it as it was and is.

That being said, I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the premise. The writing style is good and engaging and it leaves me wanting more from their author and his imagination.

Definitely a thumbs up.

A good coming of age story with good twists and turns.

I couldn't finish this book. There were so many similarities to Stephen King's Stand By Me, even the narration sounded like the narration on the movie. I felt like I could get over the emulation, but I eventually stopped listening because of the overt racism, fat shaming, and classism. I get that young kids can be cruel in thought, but it seemed like the author felt like his character's statements were justified, to me they just felt hateful. I would say this one is not worth listening to.

Trying to be Stand By Me

I think it’s supposed to be a coming of age story but the children are completely unrealistic. The sibling rivalry between the main character and his sister is overblown. The narrator is horrible and makes the mob boss sound like Count Dracula.
