Resumen del Editor

In the searing conclusion to All Mortal Flesh, Russ' balance between duty and desire was broken by his wife's tragic death. Now Russ and Episcopal priest Clare Fergusson are separated by a wall of guilt and grief. When a Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a single shot to the back of his head, Clare is drawn into the investigation. The discovery of two more bodies ignites fears that a serial killer is loose in the rural town while Russ is plagued by the media hysteria, conflict within the police department, and a series of baffling assaults. Throughout the escalating tensions, he and Clare find themselves seeking each other out even as they intend to keep distant.

Keep it up!

Flemming continues to surprise! I hope there is one more because this story isn't done.

This series just getting better!

Yes, many of her passages read like poetry so that you have to read them over and over for the beauty. Yes, she explores societal issues in a way that makes you think and accurately captures the Episcopal tradition. Yes, every character is fully formed and they are people with whom you want to spend time. But, the relationship between the primary characters is also wonderful and in this book very rewarding.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK RUINED BY BAD NARRATOR

I LOVE JULIA SPENCER-FLEMMING. BUT THE FEMALE NARRATOR IS JUST AS BAD AS BAD CAN BE. SHE IS SO BAD I MUST RETURN THE BOOK BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET EVEN A THIRD OF THE WAY IN TO THE STORY. MAYBE BECAUSE I HAVE LIVED AND KNOWN PEOPLE IN THESE PLACES, I AM CRINGE--ING! WHENEVER SHE HAS CLAIRE OR RUSS SPEAK. AND SHE MESSES UP NAMES. IS THIS LAZINESS ON THE PART OF THE PEOPLE WHO HIRED THE NARRATOR? OR IS THE NARRATOR A DUD NO MATTER WHAT SHE READS?

YOU MAY BE MORE FORGIVING. NOT EVERYONE IS ANNA FIELDS (RIP), JOSEPHINE BAILEY, GEORGE GUIDALL OR SIMON PREBBLE. BUT I WONDER WHY SO MANY OF MY AUDIBLE BOOKS HAVE THIS TERRIBLE NARRATOR PROBLEM.

I WISH THE SAMPLE SITE WOULD BEGIN WITH THE NARRATOR READING CH 1. THAT'S WHAT MOST PEOPLE DO WHEN BROWSING BOOKS. THEN THE SAMPLE SHOULD INCLUDE A SEGMENT WITH CONVERSATION SO THE BUYER CAN GET A FEEL FOR THE WAY CHARACTERS ARE PORTRAYED BY THE NARRATOR'S VOICE. WHEN I READ REVIEWS AND I SEE A LOT OF WHINEY WOMEN IN BOOKS I HAVE ALREADY READ IN HB, AND I SAY TO MYSELF "I DIDN'T COME ACROSS ANY WHINEY WOMEN WHEN I READ THE BOOK", I THINK: THE USUALLY MALE, BUT NOT NECESSARILY SO, READER HAS NO RANGE OR DOESN'T KNOW MANY FEMALES.

EVEN A C+ FIRST NOVEL CAN BE MADE INTO A REALLY NICE AUDIO BOOK IF THE NARRATOR DOES THEIR HOMEWORK.

DO AUTHORS GET TO PICK THE NARRATOR OR IS THAT A PUBLISHING DECISION? NOW, UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF GOING FROM HARDBACK TO AUDIBLE WOULD MAKE A NICE INTERVIEW PIECE BY THE STAFF, EDITORS, GUESTS!!

MY RCOMENDATION: READ JULIA SPENCER-FLEMING IN ORDER. AND IF YOU ARE PICKY ABOUT THE READER, GET THIS AUDIO OUT OF THE LIBRARY AND SEE IF YOU CAN STAND THE READER UP TO PAGE 75 IN THE MASS MARKET: THE FIRST MEETING BETWEEN CLAIRE AND RUSS...YOU MAYMAKE IT THRU W/O GASPING ALOUD AT FAKE VA ACCENTS OR WAY SO BAD "NORTH COUNTRY" ACCENTS FROM A 50 YR OLD MILITARY GUY WHO LEFT TOWN AT 18 & DIDN'T COME HOME UNTIL HIS MID-40'S. NOT EVEN SCARLET O'HARA COULD KEEP AN ACCENT IN SUCH A LIFE.

THIS BOOK HAS TOO MANY SPOILERS FOR NEWCOMERS TO THE SERIES, SO I RECOMMEND READING THEM IN ORDER. MORE TENSE THAN COZY MYSTERIES; NOT HARDBOILED. A GOOD TOUCH OF HUMOR TO EVEN OUT THE DRAMA. THE 2 MAIN CHARACTERS ARE A FEMALE EPISCOPAL PRIEST AND THE SMALL TOWN CHIEF OF POLICE. CLAIRE'S PARENTS ARE PILOTS RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS. CLAIRE JOINED THE ARMY OUT OF COLLEGE TO LEARN TO FLY HELICOPTERS. [HER BACKGROUND AND HER VOCATION GET TOLD IN THE FIRST NOVEL In the Bleak Mid-Winter]. THE CHIEF OF POLICE RETURNS HOME AN UPSTATE- ADIRONDACK- SMALL TOWN. THE SETTING IS NORTHEASTERN NY, ADIRONDACK MTS LOOMING OVER DAIRY FARMS ALL SURROUNDED BY A WHOLE LOT OF WOODS AND ROLLING PASTURE LAND.

THE SECONDARY CHARACTERS HOLD THEIR OWN.

J S-F IS A VERY GOOD MYSTERY WRITER AS HER NUMEROUS AWARDS ATTEST. DEFINITELY GIVE HER A TRY. BUT BEWARE BAD NARRATOR.
