Reseñas editoriales

Editors Select, April 2014 - I’m not the type of person who typically reads celebrity biographies. To be honest, I’ve only read these types of books out of need on long flights. I willingly picked up Judy Greer’s I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star because I happen to love the eclectic mix of television shows and movies in which she’s been. Her book is funny, interesting, and honest. She speaks of her childhood in Michigan, her college years in Chicago, and her time in L.A. The best part? It’s like listening to your best friend talk about her day. –Laura, Audible Editor

Resumen del Editor

Like Tina Fey, Chelsea Handler, and other (best-selling) co-stars, Judy Greer is taking pen to paper and in her honest, self-deprecating, and hilariously relatable way reminding us why she's not America's sweetheart but America's best friend.

You know Judy Greer, right? Wait, what was she in again? The Wedding Planner, 13 Going on 30, 27 Dresses, The Descendants. Yes, you totally recognize her. And, odds are, if you're like most women in America, you feel like she's already your friend. Thankfully, Greer has finally written a book of essays about all the moments, topics, observations, and confessions that you would hope to hear from your best friend. How a midnight shopping trip to CVS can cure all. What it's like to have stepchildren. And how she really feels about her mother. Yes, it's all in there. But Judy Greer isn't just a regular friend - she's a celebrity friend. Want to know which celebs she's peed next to? Or what the Oscars were actually like? Or which hot actor gave her father a Harley Davidson? Don't worry - that's included, too. Besides being laugh-out-loud funny, you'll love her because she makes us genuinely feel like she's one of us. Because even though she sometimes has a stylist and a make-up artist, she still wears (and hates!) Spanx. Because she starts her book like this: "This is who I am. This is what I think about things. This is stuff that happened to me, that could have just as easily have happened to you. I'm not that special, and we're probably not that different. I think I am really lucky to be where I am in life, but I've never really lost that feeling that I don't fit in, and if you have, will you please email me and tell me how you did it? I'm serious."

Funniest book about Show Biz in A Long Time

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Bcause it's very funny.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The blind date with the man who would become her husband. Anyone who's been on a blind date can relate. She forgot what he looked like, after two hours of talking to him over dinner.

Which scene was your favorite?

Getting to know her step children and her husband's ex.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Ashton Kutcher bought Judy's dad a serious Harley, just cause Ashton's a good guy.

Any additional comments?

I'd be surprised if she doesn't become a major comedy star, after this book. She's really funny and you can't help but wish her the best.

Like a funny friend telling you stories

Would you listen to I Don't Know What You Know Me From again? Why?

Yes! Judy was just FUN to listen to. I loved hearing about her life as a actress, LA, her childhood, her marraige, her friendships. It was just like going to cocktails with that funny friend who just honest about what's happening in her life - and yours. Good comedy doesn't shy away from imperfections and the trials of life - it just helps us laugh at the absurdity of it. And I loved hearing it in Judy Greer's own wonderful voice.

What other book might you compare I Don't Know What You Know Me From to and why?

Bossypants by Tina Fey and Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kahling

Which character – as performed by Judy Greer – was your favorite?

herself :)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes - but since it's broken up into different ideas, i didn't have to! Perfect for my commute

Any additional comments?

try it! you'll like it!

Light and bright

This book is a testament to not taking yourself (or life) too seriously. I found her take on things intoxicatingly bingeable, if for no other reason than it being a reprieve from the cultural norms where everything is a problem or dramatic or intense. She’s fun. And this book reminded me to take each chapter in life moment-to-moment and not read too deeply into everything.

With that being said, I was waiting for her to get deeper, specifically with acting. Call it projection or blame it on the title, but I was hoping for a little glimpse into her relationship to her career beyond it being what she fell into. At one point she does say acting wasn’t her life “yet”, which made me anticipate the moment it did become her life and what that was like in terms of passion. Instead, I got a lukewarm feel throughout and was shocked when the last chapter came to a close. So it wasn’t quite the payoff I was expecting, but I still appreciate the lightheartedness of it.

Not everything has to hit hard in the humanity. This was fun, and it made me feel like anything is possible. And the organization and performance was crisp. So for all intents and purposes, I enjoyed it, even if it left me a little less than satisfied.

Yay!!! Another Audible Favorite!

This book was on par with my absolute, hands down favorite "BossyPants". Judy Greer's stories are touching, funny, interesting and well narrated. As another small town Michigan girl, her early essays on growing up outside Detroit during the "John Hughes" era made me feel like we were besties exchanging memories. Love this book!!!

Discovered Through Marc Maron's WTF Podcast

Bios and memoirs are my favorite of the Audiobook categories. I feel like you're having a one-on-one conversation and getting to know the author on a personal level. Judy Greer's interview with Marc Maron was a pleasant listen and was glad to see she had a book out. She has a dedication to her craft, speaks incredibly well, and her personality shines in her debut as an author. Performance artists, like Judy Greer, give audiobooks an edge in experiencing it as a listener. Would recommend her book and hope she writes more in the years to come.

It was okay...

It was like having a whiny rich white friend talk in your ear for hours without asking how you are, or considering all the real issues happening in the world. Nevertheless, it wasn't totally boring. Her voice is kind of annoying, but she has a good heart, henceforth my review title: it was okay.

Pretty good, I enjoyed it but didn't love it

I enjoyed this listen but didn't love it. She talks about so many random topics - I really wish she would have delved into her work on her movies, working with big name stars and what it's like to be on set, at red carpets - which she touches on, but it still fell over all flat. I enjoyed her story and path to Hollywood and talking about being a stepmom and wife to "Dean Johnson" never just "Dean" which I thought was cute! A cute, fluffy listen but not much more. I was hoping for more, Judy! :) I think you're awesome and have carved a unique role and path for yourself in Hollywood!
