I was married for almost thirty years when I met George. The day he had surgery after collapsing from an infected cyst on his spine, I went to the hospital to support his son. Seeing George’s family at his bedside, I was reminded of waking up in a hospital myself eight years earlier, after miraculously surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. When George roused from an induced coma, he learned he was paralyzed from the neck down. He was moved to a nursing facility a few months later, where I visited him regularly. I continued to battle my own health and emotional issues as we diligently worked to increase George's mobility beyond his surgeon’s bleak prognosis. Together, we fought to overcome obstacles; forming friendships, making enemies, and falling in love.
