It's ok

Judging from what the author wrote about the book regarding it being an 'apocalyptic' type book, I was expecting more of that. This felt more like a spiritual warfare book with a little bit of science fiction in it. I didn't feel that some of the descriptions of the fights were necessary to be quite so graphic and the description of who HIM is didn't quite fit who he was once he began 'speaking' and we heard his thoughts. In short, I guess, the author needs to work on developing the characters a bit better.
I listened to the audio book version of this, and, while the narrator has a great speaking voice, I felt that he tended to 'over act' the parts for HIM, specifically.
Give them a try and judge for yourself. Maybe I was just having an 'off day' while listening. I wish both good luck!!

Interesting faith filled post-apocalyptic fantasy!

Scott W. Kimak writes an interesting faith filled post-apocalyptic fantasy. The MC is well developed, the supporting characters are engaging and have POV scenes as well. The world is filled with demons and despair, but the MC and his friends are filled with hope in HIM. I look forward to book 2 in the series. Audio Version: Scott Glennon does a good job with the characters and narration.

Great Story, fast paced

loved this story and the story arc. be forewarned this moves fast and if you are not paying attention you will feel lost.

The narrator does an amazing job separating each character with a distinctive voice that you remember and who you hear you immediately go "oh, it's that character."

Great listen and looking forward to future work from this author

Interesting start

This is a genre I was not aware of , a christian based dystopian novel. It has a unique story line with unusual characters. I m looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

Could Have Been a Contender …

Sadly, it is very hard to find quality “Christian” fantasy stories … with many, like this one, focused on imagining dystopian world of the “Tribulation” coming with the Eschaton (End of the World), they all seem to eschew any true world building and character development in favor of streams of descriptions (info dumps) that overly emphasizes Mary Sue/Gary Stu nature of the hero with the requisite deus ex machine plot points and unredeemable evil of the “ultimate” antagonist … complete with a appalling voyeuristic telling of how said evil manifests in the world (presumably for shock value … though frequently it’s gratuitous).

This book fits neatly into that apocalyptic style … with the added detraction of what I appears to be a freshman debut of the writer’s craft. There is little to no nuance in this extremely derivative story (so many tropes so little time) … pretty much everything is obvious or otherwise predictable. While there is a hero … the hero’s journey is nearly unrecognizable and flat. Character interactions were nearly cartoonish in their simplicity and the humor overly crude … and the POV disciple was almost non-existent (switching between 1st person to various 3rd persons). The “Big Guy,” aka HIM, apparently doesn’t speak (vow of silence? to make him darkly mysterious?), so the author adds a narrator and sex crazed “Bill” to provide the needed dialog … until HIM speaks for some unidentified reason (sort of … so not an actual vow? just being a jerk?) …

Seriously … this book needs a few trigger warnings (and maybe some bleach). Also Physics (or pretty much any realism) was an apparently only suggestion (possibly the result of lazy research which undermines a significant portion of the book). Finally, without any connection to the protagonist (I actively disliked them), it was extremely hard not to feel disappointed at the missed opportunity (the flap copy was the best part). I wanted to like this story … I just couldn’t.

Unfortunately … where good narration can sometimes improve a marginal story, the narration here had the opposite effect for me. The cadence and enunciation were so extremely discordant that it gave the whole work an unnatural and amateurish feel that emphasized the short comings of the story itself.

I was given this free advance listener copy (ALC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
