I slutningen af 1936 drog George Orwell til Spanien for at deltage i den spanske borgerkrig og kæmpe på oprørssiden mod de nationalistiske og fascistiske kræfter ledet af general Franco. Fire måneder senere vendte han såret og desillusioneret hjem efter at have set kommunisternes brutale udryddelse af andre oprørsgrupper og skrev herefter en af de mest berømte beretninger om den spanske borgerkrig, reportageromanen Hyldest til Catalonien.
Hyldest til Catalonien er baseret på Orwells egne oplevelser fra den spanske borgerkrig. Med emi-nent blik for detaljerne beskriver han livet i skyttegravene, kampens frustrationer og ineffektivitet. Orwell selv blev alvorligt såret ved fronten af et skud i halsen, og på orlov i Barcelona måtte han gå under jorden og flygte for livet, da kommunisterne vendte sig mod de andre oprørsgrupper.
Orwells oplevelser under borgerkrigen blev skelsættende for ham og præger hele hans efterfølgende forfatterskab. Det udtrykkes bedst med et citat af Orwell selv: "Hver eneste linje, jeg har skrevet siden 1936, er blevet skrevet direkte eller indirekte mod totalitarisme og for demokratisk socialisme, som jeg forstår det."
Da Hyldest til Catalonien udkom i 1938 gik den stort set ubemærket hen. Det billede, Orwell tegne-de af kommunisternes rolle i krigen, ønskede mange ikke at tro på, og det blev fornægtet af særligt vestens venstreintellektuelle. Først i 1952 blev den udgivet i USA og begyndte at opnå udbredelse. Siden har den indtaget pladsen som en af Orwells væsentligste bøger og en af de vigtigste beskri-velser af den spanske borgerkrig.

George Orwell, pseudonym for Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950), var en engelsk forfatter, essayist og journalist, født i Indien. Efter endt skolegang på Eton College, arbejde han fra 1922-27 i det koloniale politi i Burma. Han vendte herefter tilbage til Europa, hvor han oplevede forholdene på samfundets bund som opvasker i Paris og som vagabond og hjemløs i London. Senere deltog han som frivillig i den spanske borgerkrig i 1937. Efter hjemkomsten ernærede Orwell sig som journalist samtidig med, at han skrev sine romaner og politiske og kulturelle essays. Det gjorde ham til en af sin tids mest fremtrædende forfattere.
