I learned early that if you want to live naked with any kind of confidence you have to make peace with the fact that your body is going to do its own thing no matter how many inspirational podcasts you listen to. My thighs clap like applause at a middle school talent show. My boobs have a personal vendetta against gravity. My butt, well, Tanya insists hers is better, but she also insists she can run a six minute mile which is a lie supported only by her yoga pants.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest where people pretend to be rugged but also complain if the drizzle is too drizzly. Nudism felt like a natural extension of that spirit. If the rain was going to soak me anyway, why bother with jeans that feel like wet cardboard.

Still, I did not exactly wake up one morning with the confidence to waltz into a nudist resort like some enlightened forest nymph!

My first time trying anything nude related was at a hot spring in Oregon when I was twenty two. I remember peeling off my clothes the way you peel a sticker that you are not sure will leave glue behind. I stood there trying to look casual while clutching my towel like it was life insurance. Then an older woman walked by, completely unclothed except for the confidence of someone who has seen everything life can possibly sag or wrinkle, and she said, Honey, it is just skin. That was the moment I realized I was dramatically overthinking the whole thing.

By thirty eight I was a full convert. I drive a Volvo XC60 which I lovingly call the Nude Mobile because the seats are soft enough that if you sit bare you feel like you have been gently cupped by a cloud and your bare butt feels good. Donna my Persian cat has witnessed me wandering around the house undressed so often she only lifts one judgmental eyelid now. I travel constantly to nudist places because it turns out nothing boosts a woman’s self esteem like watching fifty strangers confidently air dry after a swim.

I wrote this book because people always ask how I became so comfortable in my skin.

Usually they whisper it like they are asking for illegal substances. Here is the truth. You do not wake up one day with full body nude confidence. You build it through awkward stories, tiny victories, and a lot of trial and error. You learn how to keep your cool when a breeze hits parts of you that were not expecting meteorological involvement. You learn to laugh when your friend Tanya loudly announces that your left cheek is doing something weird. You learn to shrug when Susan tries to stir up drama by daring you to do something she refuses to attempt herself.

Most of all you learn this is not a journey about having a perfect body. It is about having a body, period. A body that moves, jiggles, sweats, wiggles, betrays you, delights you, and carries you straight into the life you want to live.

So here we go. My seven step process for becoming the most unapologetically naked version of yourself. I promise to tell you the truth, even the embarrassing bits, especially the embarrassing bits, because that is where the magic sits.
