See, I'd been talking about building a bunker for probably five years at that point. Every time there was a natural disaster on the news, every time the power grid went down for more than a few hours, every time I saw empty shelves at the grocery store, I'd tell my wife Sarah, "We need to build something. We need a real plan."
And she'd nod, and I'd research a bit, and then life would happen and I'd put it off again.
But that March afternoon was different. We'd just gone through our third major power outage in six months. Not because of storms or anything dramatic, just because our local infrastructure was old and overloaded. We'd spent three days with no electricity, watching our food spoil, trying to keep the kids comfortable, and basically feeling helpless in our own home.
That's when it hit me: I wasn't preparing for some Hollywood apocalypse scenario. I was preparing for the very real, very likely emergencies that happen to regular people every single year.
What This Book Is Actually About
Let me be straight with you right from the start. This isn't a book about building some massive underground complex with multiple levels, hydroponics systems, and blast doors that cost more than my truck. That's not reality for folks like us.
This is a book about building something real, something affordable, and something you can actually accomplish without taking out a second mortgage or quitting your day job.
When I say affordable, here's what I mean: I built my bunker for under $8,000. That includes everything: the excavation, the structure, the basic systems, all of it. Could you spend less? Absolutely. I know guys who've done it for $4,000 by scrounging materials and doing more of the work themselves. Could you spend more and get something nicer? Sure. But my point is this falls into the range where a regular working family can actually make it happen.
Who Am I And Why Should You Listen?
Fair question. I'm not some survival expert with a TV show. I'm not a contractor or an engineer. I'm a regular guy who works in IT, has three kids, a mortgage, and the same worries you probably have about what might happen to my family if things go sideways.
What I am is someone who actually did this. I researched, I planned, I made mistakes, I learned from them, and I ended up with a functional bunker that my family can use when we need it. And more importantly, I documented everything so that you don't have to make the same expensive mistakes I did.
I've been into preparedness for about fifteen years now. Started small with just a better pantry and some camping gear. Worked my way up to more serious preparations. The bunker was always the thing I thought was out of reach until I really started digging into it (pun intended) and realized it was more doable than I thought.
