A skull from the fur trade era has been unearthed. Who would bury just a skull, and why? An archaeology crew has been dispatched to see if they can find some answers - perfect excuse to get the motorbikes on the road and combine some work with pleasure.
A short ride to see where the skull was found turns into a much longer expedition to track down the rest of the skeleton, eventually encountering the remains of an eighteenth century voyageur on the banks of the Nipigon River.
Lewis Dufresne was murdered more than two hundred years ago by his fur trade crew who were convinced he was a cannibal. Now, his body has been unearthed releasing his spirit from its long purgatory. Lewis has awoken and discovered that he's full or anger, lust and hunger.
Following his bones back to Kingston, Lewis discovers that twenty-first century life is very different to what he knew while he was alive. But his eagerness for human flesh and blood is undiminished, and his hate and lust is entirely focussed on one of the archaeologists who dug us his bones.

I was really looking forward to this one, and it didn’t disappoint. What starts as a simple discovery—a lone skull from the fur-trade era—pulls Steve Dawson, Theo, and resident ghost magnet Monica back into the mix, this time astride their motorbikes (yeah!), and straight into a much bigger mystery.

This is the third book in Nick Adams’s Friends of the Dead series—sadly, the last... Nooo! I tore through these, and I’m left begging for more. Nick’s blend of adventure, history, humor, and outright creepiness is just dead-on perfect.

And then there’s Nick’s narration—good grief. The man could read the back of a cereal box, and I’d be glued to it. His delivery is so clean, so eloquent, and so... Nick Adams that he’s easily three out of my top five favorite narrators. There’s this distinct British warmth to his voice that always makes me picture a David Attenborough documentary—Nick crouched in the jungle, book in hand, calmly explaining the feeding habits of the silverback gorilla… only to then see the gorilla quietly sitting, cross-legged, and listening to him finish the chapter. Come on, Nick—do it for me and the gorillas. How about one more?

Another winner. If you’re thinking about jumping into this series, don’t hesitate. Just start. It’s a blast.

A fantastic third entry—dark, fun, addictive!
