The small, isolated labour camp of Hope Rise at Middle River, five miles up from the settlement of Mokau, offered a beacon of hope for the six families chosen to live there. The sanctuary gave them an escape away from the long and arduous depression following the First World War as New Zealand clawed its way back from the brink of ruin. But, while they found strength in hard work and their daily rituals, nobody anticipated how difficult it would be to get back on their feet while the country was still on its knees.
Despite the problems, Hope Rise soon became a place where war-tarnished men and their families created their own sense of identity in the hill country farms as while some gave everything, others brought their own problems, but with meagre belongings yet generous hearts, they made a place to call home.
Hope Rise is a story of optimism and anticipation of a better life away from the widespread destitution and hardships of life on the outside. It is a story about war-weary families working hard to break the land as they shared dreams, hopes and sorrows. For some, it became a place of contentment as they threw themselves into the opportunities they saw, but for others, it became a dangerous mix as secrets were ripped open and lives of men, women and children put at risk in an effort to conceal the deceit and the lies which threatened to tear the community apart.
‘Hope Rise’ is a companion novel to the classic series of New Zealand/Aotearoa historical and contemporary fiction, ‘The Colour of Our Country’ and slips in at the end of book three, ‘The In-Between Years’ and before the start of book four, ‘The Lucky Years’.
