Resumen del Editor

From acclaimed classicist Gregory Carlson, discover new insights into one of the greatest works of literature ever composed: Homer’s Odyssey. Why does this ancient epic poem continue to enthrall readers/listeners from all walks of life? You’re undoubtedly familiar with the Odyssey in some form. Now, this exciting audio course invites you to discover Homer’s text with new eyes.

Your presenter, Rev. Gregory Carlson, S.J. (D.Phil, University of Heidelberg), is a renowned classicist and award-winning literature professor who has taught at Georgetown University, The College of the Holy Cross, and Creighton University. In his 12 lively lectures, the Western world’s most engaging story comes alive again with all its poetry, drama, and action.

As you voyage through the Odyssey book by book, you will be captivated by Homer’s artistry. In this course, you will journey to fantastic lands filled with sea monsters and sirens, gods, and giants. Rev. Carlson presents fresh perspectives on familiar stories by drawing out their implications and challenges for Odysseus. If you think of Odysseus as just another ancient hero, you will find yourself surprised, as Homer reveals this man as distinctive - and remarkably modern.

As Rev. Carlson brings the poem to life, you will come to see that it is not just about adventures; the poem itself is an adventure. Indeed, Homer will challenge your perceptions about success, relationships, and human identity.

This course is part of the Learn25 collection.

Outstanding course by an engaging professor

This is an audio course taught by a leading classics professor who also happens to be a Jesuit priest. He is a distinctive take on this great epic. Carlson explores Homer's tale with the knack of a superb literary scholar, but his main task is to draw out insights about the human condition, about discernment and the big questions. His style is engaging and his material thoughtful.
