At 15, I killed someone. This was just one of many secrets that my brain hid from me. For most of my life, I had barely any memories of my childhood. Except for a few snippets, I lived in the dark. It wasn’t until I turned 36 that my world began to unravel. Some might say that my struggles started with my father’s murder when I was 16, but the truths were more complex than that. The real story goes much deeper.

Despite my entrepreneurial success and a seemingly perfect life in the United States, a shadow lingered, trapping me in despair, addiction, and disconnection. That shadow started to disappear when I dared to go to the darkest corners of my mind and past.

For me, what I desperately sought was hidden in my childhood, and I dug deep, embarking on a wild ride through various treatments - some conventional, others quite unconventional. She doesn’t just recount trauma; she explains it. She gives language to what so many of us feel but can’t articulate — the buried emotions, the coping mechanisms, the hidden memories we don’t even realize are controlling us. It took me a while to pinpoint what is so special about the way this book is written. Simply put, it’s written by a healed woman. While Melissa endured some unspeakable things, her story is delivered with such authenticity, dignity and power that I never felt pity for her. Nor did I compare my own trauma to hers and dismiss it as relatively trivial and undeserving of attention. Rather I felt as if she were giving me permission to explore and address my trauma with the same significance while demystifying plant medicine as a pathway to do so. Melissa’s voice is endearing. Her truth is raw and captivating. You will feel her characters come alive and empathize with them all. Thank you for one of the best personal growth books I’ve experienced. I wish all medicine were served so eloquently.
