Welcome to the seaside town of New Shrimpton, where magic is in the air, shrimp can be scooped up by the barrel, and a murderer hides in plain sight… Alice Munroe is the only PI in town, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a little help. For one, she can speak to animals and plants… though her cat, the extravagantly grumpy Mr. Ploppers, sometimes makes her wish she couldn’t. Still, when that’s not enough, she has a few other magical tricks up her sleeve. Things go sideways, however, when she’s hired to investigate a death that everyone has written off as natural. Save for the widower, who not only believes his wife has been murdered, but soon convinces Alice of the same. Problem is, she’s never investigated a murder before, and her usual methods aren’t cutting it. After being tempted into using black magic to solve the case, Alice loses her powers, leaving her in a state of dismay. Lucky for her, help comes in the form of her spitfire Aunt Penny. Can the two solve this bewildering murder together? And will Alice ever get her magical powers back?

it's a decent story. I'd read more by this author. wish aunt Penny had stayed and teamed up.
