Hester (1883) is a dramatic story of female power and family tensions within Victorian society. Using her own money, Catherine Vernon manages to save the family bank from collapse after her cousin John absconds with some of its money. As the matriarch of Redborough, Catherine is used to commanding authority, but this is challenged with the arrival of John’s strong and capable teenage daughter, Hester. Ignorant of her father’s conduct, Hester takes against Catherine and a mutual antipathy soon sets in. A masterpiece of domestic realism, the novel is one of Mrs Oliphant’s most admired works.

An excellent story

One of Mrs Oliphant’s best novels. A good plot and characters who take on the belief of reality. The narration is first rate.

Georgina Sutton is an excellent narrator of this novel

Margaret Oliphant is a new author for me. I recommend this story of wills between two strong women.

Awesome characters

I absolutely loved this book! Even though I got mad at some of the characters at times. Hester and Catherine were amazing!

A great listen

Hester has a uch a great story line. It is beautifully written. Interesting twists & characters. Very well read.

It’s Not Trollope…

Trollope is my baseline for Victorian literature. I stuck with this to the end. It was pleasantly written and performed but nothing really happened until the very last chapter… then it all wrapped up super quick. It dragged after the stage was set in chapter one and two. It got tedious throughout the middle 80% and then the flurry of the outcome was underwhelming.
