Good morning, Daddy. Daddy, is Mommy coming back today?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

His words hit me like a ton of bricks. I closed my eyes, trying to manage the darkness that rushed up at me and threatened to pull me into its abyss.

After a moment, I could sit down and I placed Michael on one knee. I ruffled his sandy brown hair, forcing my voice to sound lighter than I felt.

"We've talked about this, buddy," I said, my voice raspy. I spoke very gently, hoping not to upset Michael. "Mommy has gone to a place where we can't see her. She's in heaven now, with God."

Michael's eyes filled with tears. “But when is she coming back? I want my mommy.”

He started to cry, and soon heavy sobs wracked his small body. I held him closer, trying to comfort him.

Sandra, my older child, came into the room just then. She saw Michael crying and took him from me. Michael wrapped himself around her and she held him close, rocking him back and forth.

"It's okay, Mikey," she said soothingly. "Mommy's in a better place now. She's not hurting anymore."

Sandra gave me a look. It was a look of accusation and understanding and, also, of shared grief.

“Remember we prayed that God would make mommy’s pain go away? She’s fine now; she’s in God’s arms. He has made mommy all better.” She continued to whisper into his ear, her words soothing Michael as they left the room together.
