Thomas Keating O.C.S.O.
Acerca de esta escucha
Two internationally known spiritual guides explore integrating our inner and outer journeys. They challenge us to confront our inner and social violence and bring it to healing and transformation in a sacred and ecumenical context. Rohr and Keating each give insights on awakening to God's friendship, coming to know God and ourselves, growing in love through centering prayer, facing evil around us and our demons within us as well as opening our deep selves to divine therapy which heals our wounds. They invite us to become who we already are.
These conferences will appeal to those beginning and those more seasoned in centering prayer. The deep wisdom of two spiritual masters is a sacred and transforming gift plunging us into the ocean of divinity that surrounds us.

Historia
In this first volume in a three-part series, Richard Rohr develops aspects of transformation, a recurring theme in his popular presentations. Talk One: "Jesus: Forgiving Victim, Transforming Savior". If we imitate the way Jesus lived the role of victim, we will be able to live the Christian mystery. Jesus suffers freely but does not pass on the pain. He forgives, which destroys the death that confronts us. He says, “No one else is your problem. You are the locus of conversion and transformation.”

Historia
Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the “problem of the self". Most of contemporary spiritual teaching, he believes, is still trying to inspire and fortify the private self, the autonomous "I". Even much church work is trying to evangelize and sacramentalize what many would call "the false self." Basic transformation is not expected, but merely a new set of beliefs and practices or loyal membership in a new group.

In the first half of life, we are naturally preoccupied with establishing ourselves; climbing, achieving, and performing. But as we grow older and encounter challenges and mistakes, we need to see ourselves in a different and more life-giving way. This message of falling down - that is in fact moving upward - is the most resisted and counterintuitive of messages in the world's religions. Falling Upward offers a new paradigm for understanding one of the most profound of life's mysteries: how those who have fallen down are the only ones who understand "up".

Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved of all saints. Both traditional and entirely revolutionary, he was a paradox. He was at once down-to-earth and reaching toward heaven, grounded in the rich history of the Church while moving toward a new understanding of the world beyond. Franciscan Father Richard Rohr helps us look beyond the birdbath image of the saint to remind us of the long tradition founded on Francis' revolutionary, radical, and life-changing embrace of the teachings of Jesus.

Both Rohr and D'Arcy believe that much personal and church confusion could be helped by clearly distinguishing the tasks of the two halves of life. Much of institutional religion is concerned with the tasks of the first half of life. The need for adults is to move onto the tasks of the second half of life, which are much closer to the concerns of Jesus, Buddha and the mystics of all religions.

Boys become men in much the same way across cultures, by integrating, through experience, each of five messages: Life is hard; You are not that important; Your life is not about you; You are not in control; You are going to die. Our culture has done everything in its power, it seems, to move away from this ancient wisdom. Men are lured away to dominate through money, sex, power, consumerism—and never really become men.

The enlightenment you seek in other religions has been present in Christianity from the beginning. Richard Rohr, a global leader in spiritual awakening, helps you recognize the forces (such as ego resistance and dual thinking) that separate you from your deeper self. Then, drawing from Gospels and the greatest Christian contemplatives, he shows you what it means to be spiritually awake. You will learn why your ego resists change and growth, what is useful about popular ideas such as the law of attraction, what Jesus, the first mythical leader in the West, can teach you.

Historia
In his best-selling book Falling Upward, Richard Rohr talked about ego (or the False Self) and how it gets in the way of spiritual maturity. But if there's a False Self, is there also a True Self? What is it? How is it found? This book likens True Self to a diamond, buried deep within us, formed under the intense pressure of our lives, that must be searched for, uncovered, separated from all the debris of ego that surrounds it. In a sense True Self must, like Jesus, be resurrected, and that process is not resuscitation but transformation.

Historia
Western civilization is undergoing a crisis of meaning, and the Christian community needs to find new value, identity, and purpose through hope, says Franciscan Father Richard Rohr. In lectures and homilies he describes both the crisis and cure. In the 13th century, he tells us, St. Francis was called by the Lord to “rebuild my Church.” Anguished by the fragmentation in the Church today, Rohr invites us to rebuild the Church in the 21st century.

Historia
New Seeds of Contemplation is one of Thomas Merton's most widely known and best-loved books. Christians and non-Christians alike have joined in praising it as a notable successor in the meditative tradition of St. John of the Cross, The Cloud of Unknowing, and the medieval mystics, while others have compared Merton's reflections with those of Thoreau.

From infancy, Father Keating teaches, we accumulate emotional layers, or programs, as a result of traumatic experiences. The practice of Centering Prayer engages directly with the unconscious and loosens old traumas that hinder your spiritual development. This form of divine therapy draws from a contemplative method that has brought profound inner transformation into the lives of thousands of practitioners. The Contemplative Journey is Father Thomas Keating's great masterwork.

Excellent material, but….
I’ve come to really appreciate Richard Rohr more and more. This was my first exposure to Keating. I agree with their diagnosis of humanity’s problem and healing prescription. My one problem, and it’s not even a problem is there’s not much on centering prayer

Good Stuff
What was one of the most memorable moments of Healing Our Violence Through the Journey of Centering Prayer?
Really enjoyed the concept of demons and the parrallel to the pain body
Have you listened to any of Richard Rohr and Thomas Keating ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First by Thomas Keating. I have enjoyed the few Richard Rohr recordings that I have
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Its not practical for me to listen to a long book all in one sitting. Also, i think you need to reflect on the content to get the most out of it.

Unmatched in nearly 50 years
Though brief in time, this series of sessions puts a humble yet Divine tone on words all of us need to hear and act upon. What life di we have if we live without aim, without purpose. Having listened once, I will immediately listen once again to assure nothing has escaped my ears, my mind, and my heart.

No sugar coating our path to transformation.
Healing happens first within you. One cannot go out and be a source of healing to another unless one first looks within. Only then can our true self surface.
Richard Rohr and Thomas Keating help us name our demons. The only problem is as Christians we pretty much believe that we don't have any demons and that fact in itself is demonic.
The next demon is believing that you have conquered them and you are on your way to transformation. But, in reality one goes one step forward and two steps backwards. Okay, you say enough already. This is like dancing a tango and you are right. So what do we do with this dilemma?
Thomas Keating and Richard Rohr give us the understanding that accepting our demons, looking at them and letting them go one at a time. is the path to recovery. Accepting the fact that we don't have it all together, helps us heal faster and go on with our relationships and healing the world, one person at a time beginning with myself.
Does this sound too narcissistic or ego related? Well, it is, at first. You have to discover that part of yourself to move beyond. (The false self)
Your true self is buried deep within and you have the power to dig it out. The Divine within has always been there from the moment of conception but we have spent a lifetime burying that innocence.

Little new to learn
OK, the speakers are giants, the material is solid. At the same time, for any seasoned practitioner of Christian prayer, meditation, Krishna consciousness, yoga or Sufism - there is precious little new to learn here. I like other presentations from Fr. Richard Rohr much much more.

No Hell
Thomas Keating O. C. S. O. states at the end of Chapter 5 that Hell is a state of consciousness. There are many things from these lectures the listener will benefit from. They are very enlightening.
