Every town has its stories, but here in Havant, the stories have flippers, fur and even fangs! They whisper from the ancient stones of our parish church, howl in the forest at Stanstead, crawl through our drains and rise like mist from the waters of a sacred spring. They are etched into the timber frames of our oldest pubs and carried on the salt-laden wind that sweeps in from the coast. To walk through this borough is to walk through layers of time, and some of those layers are very thin indeed.
The name itself is a clue, an echo from an Anglo-Saxon past:
Hama's Funta, or "Hammar's Spring". This life-giving water, which you will soon visit, was the heart around which a community grew. But the human presence here is far older. Archaeologists have unearthed flint tools left by hunter-gatherers who walked this land long before the first stones were laid for the Great Pyramid of Giza. These are the deepest footprints, the first faint whispers of a story that has been unfolding for millennia.
That story is written in the Roman foundations discovered beneath St. Faith's Church, and the battle scars from a Civil War skirmish are still visible on its walls. It’s a history of smugglers and sailors, of faith and fear, of violent injustice and lingering sorrow. It is little wonder, then, that in a place so soaked in human history, some of its residents have never truly left.
This guide is your key. It will lead you not just to the historic landmarks, but to the cold spots in the graveyard, the haunted upper room of a cursed pub, and the lonely stretch of coast where phantom monks still pace the shoreline.
So, take a deep breath. Whether you are a believer or a sceptic, open your mind to the possibility that the past is not gone. Here in Havant, it’s merely waiting in the shadows.
Let's begin!
