Called to his hometown on family business, Richard Branch, almost seventy years old, visits the house in which he grew up, now inhabited by another family. That visit triggers in him memories of his parents and an increasing curiosity about what their lives might have been like and what those lives, and by extension, his own, might mean. In his quest he discovers the existence of a half brother, the product of his father’s adultery, a revelation that, at last, raises more questions than it answers.
