In the New Testament, the Apostle Peter offers a sobering warning about the spiritual climate of the last days. In his second epistle, he addresses the emergence of mockers who will openly ridicule and deny God's truth. This warning, found in 2 Peter 3:3-7, is both prophetic and instructive, offering insights into the characteristics of these mockers, their motivations, and the inevitable judgment of God upon them. The Characteristics of Mockers
Peter begins his discourse by stating, “Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires” (2 Peter 3:3). This description highlights three key aspects of the mockers:

1. Mocking and Ridicule: Mockers deride and belittle the promises of God, particularly the promise of Christ’s return. They question the validity of Scripture, often with sarcasm and contempt. Their words are designed to sow doubt and undermine the faith of believers.
2. Driven by Evil Desires: Peter identifies the root cause of their scoffing as their sinful lifestyle. They reject God's truth because it conflicts with their pursuit of carnal pleasures and selfish ambitions. Their mockery is a defense mechanism to justify their rebellion against God.
3. Denial of Accountability: Mockers deny the reality of divine judgment, saying, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation” (2 Peter 3:4). This reveals their skepticism about God's intervention in history and their disbelief in future judgment.

The Motivations of Mockers
The motivations of these mockers are deeply rooted in their rejection of divine authority. Peter’s warning reflects a timeless truth: humanity, in its fallen state, often seeks to escape accountability to a holy God. The scoffers’ denial of Christ’s return and judgment serves as a convenient way to continue in sin without fear of consequences.

1. Rejection of Christ's Lordship: By dismissing the Second Coming, mockers effectively reject the authority of Jesus Christ as Lord and Judge. This aligns with the broader pattern of rebellion against God described throughout Scripture.
2. Suppression of Truth: Mockers deliberately suppress the truth about God's sovereignty and the moral order of the universe. As Paul writes in Romans 1:18, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness.”
3. Love of the World: Their scoffing stems from an attachment to worldly pleasures and values. They view the prospect of Christ’s return as an unwelcome interruption to their pursuit of self-gratification.
