Their patients included survivors released from the Dachau concentration camp.
The narrative unfolds with vivid descriptions of crossing the Atlantic, lodging in a castle, working with German prisoners of war, and attempts to make dehydrated food and Spam taste good. The book describes the experiences of weddings, a paratroopers’ jump-off dance, and the surprise of a baby’s birth, immersing readers in the narrative. Their adventures included interludes in Switzerland, sailing in the Mediterranean, and the jubilation of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. The story also touches on visits to Paris, Biarritz, and trips to the magnificent Reims Cathedral to see ‘The Angel of the Smile’ statue and attend a memorable Christmas Eve service. Romantic entanglements add another layer of complexity to the girls’ wartime journey.

A richly rewarding read!

I loved the honest evolution of the characters in this story. It was also an opportunity to understand WWII from a unique perspective. When the story was over, I felt that I would be missing new, dear friends. The fact that it was read by AI also added some flavor to the narrative. It almost gave the narration a personality. English is not an easy language - even for AI, so "she" would read "1400 hours" as "one thousand four hundred hours" and GI's as "gis." It was kind of engratiating. Nothing could overshadow the warmth and honesty of the story. Kathy's personal evolution and that of her friends was profound as they tried to help and make sense of overwhelming circumstances.
