But despite his high birth, he overcame personal obstacles on the way to being one of the most famous and successful self-made men in history. In his role as a soldier, a leader of men in battle, even as a writer, he was impressive yet relatable. A patriotic civil servant of the British Empire, he dedicated his life towards the glory of his country, and towards the world's democracy.

Over the years he was never finished learning, as much from his defeats and humiliations as from his bravery and foresighted triumphs. He was the embodiment of "We shall never surrender", when his nation was marked for an inevitable defeat.
