George DeBaptiste (Madison, Indiana & Detroit, Michigan): Barber and Baker by Day, Conductor on the Underground Railroad by Night

A long-time goal has been to visit Madison, Indiana. While doing research about the Underground Railroad, I learned this river town played a prominent role. There is nothing like a personal visit to more fully understand the history that transpired there. That goal was achieved in September of 2024. Madison is a delightful town, and here is the first of several stories I hope to write. In this short story, about a 20 minute read, you will learn about George DeBaptiste, a brilliant entrepreneur who used his businesses, both as a front and a fund, for the Underground Railroad.
