In 1945, a German Christian family fears death from the Allies’ hasty advance, so they flee on a journey to the United States. There are many obstacles that challenge them along the way. World War II fighting has not ended, so a mother and her son must pretend to be a French family in order to escape an uncertain future. They take a cargo ship to New York City and hide out in an Amish town.
In 1969, while her son is studying at a university, his mother passes away. Her son, Hans, decides to build a shrine to honor his German SS father, but he goes too far. His German meetings are his only passion and he becomes obsessed, ignoring the needs his own loving family.
A Jewish family unknowingly moves into the German town while trying to run from a horrible situation. Hatred soon spreads through the neighborhood and into the children’s school. Somehow, a German girl finds love with this Jewish boy, and that love reaches out to other families living along their street.
The town’s hatred clashes with the Jewish family, but love can prove to be more powerful. Can a high school sport bring the families together?
