Doctor Sheri Fink talks about working in war zones and athletic trainer Doug Spreen on this edition of Fresh Air. Dr. Shari Fink's new book is called War Hosptial: A True Story of Surgery and Survival. It's about the group of doctors who treated patients in Srebrenica, Bosnia, during wartime, under the most extreme conditions. They treated thousands of patients, often without electricity, water, or the proper medicine. Fink is a physician and writer based in New York. She works with the humanitarian organization International Medical Corps. She just returned from Iraq and has also worked in the Balkans, southern Africa, and Central Asia. Doug Spreen is one of the official trainers for the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and has worked with the world's top tennis players, including Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Venus and Serena Williams. He is responsible for the health of all the players, and deals with their injuries before and after competition. He also has to tend to them while they are competing; he often has to run onto the court and check on athletes who are injured during play. (Broadcast Date: August 19, 2003)Want more Fresh Air?
