Hear Afghani-born physician and author Khaled Hosseini, TV critic David Bianculli, novelist Jeffrey Eugenides and jazz critic Kevin Whitehead on this edition of Fresh Air.

Khaled Hosseini's new novel is A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it is currently at the top of the New York Times best seller list. His debut novel, The Kite Runner, about a young man who returns to Afghanistan after a long absence, has been on the best seller list for two years, as both a hardcover and paperback. Fellow novelist Isabel Allende said of that book, "This is one of those unforgettable stories that stays with you for years." Hosseini, like the protagonist in The Kite Runner, left Afghanistan when he was boy and didn't return for decades. He was 11 when his family left, before the Soviet invasion. His father was a diplomat, and the family was granted political asylum in America. (Original Airdate: 8/11/2005)

Then, David Bianculli previews a new four-week anthology series called Masters of Science Fiction, airing on ABC on Saturday at 10 p.m. (ET). He says it's a modern day Outer Limits.
