Photographer Joel Meyerowitz and writer Alec Wilkinson on this edition of Fresh Air. Since September 11th, Meyerowitz has taken over 7000 photographs of Ground Zero. He gained unlimited access to the site and did so in conjunction with the Museum of the City of New York. A selection of those pictures can be seen in the May 20 issue of the New Yorker. Wilkinson is the author of new memoir, My Mentor: A Young Man's Friendship with William Maxwell (Houghton Mifflin) about his relationship with writer and editor Maxwell. Maxwell was fiction editor for the New Yorker from 1936-1976 and worked with such authors as J.D. Salinger, John Cheever, John Updike, Eudora Welty and scores of others. Maxwell was the author of a number of novels as well as several short story collections. Wilkinson is a staff writer for the New Yorker, and has been there since 1980. He's the author of several books including, Midnights, Moonshine, and Big Sugar. We'll listen to a rebroadcast of a 1995 interview with Maxwell and to an interview with Wilkinson shortly after Maxwell's August 2000 death. (Broadcast Dates: May 15, 2002 and May 10, 2002)Want more Fresh Air?
