Hear investigative reporter Carlo Bonini and actress Beatrice Arthur on this edition of Fresh Air.
Carlo Bonini, of La Repubblica newspaper in Rome, broke the story about the Italian intelligence agency SISMI's involvement in forging and planting documents that stated that Iraq had secured uranium from Niger. Those documents helped President Bush make the case for invading Iraq. Bonini's new book (with Giuseppe D'Avanzo) is Collusion: International Espionage and the War on Terror.
Then, Beatrice Arthur, who is best known for her starring role in the TV sitcom Maude, produced by Norman Lear (in the 1970s), and for her co-starring role in The Golden Girls (in the 1980s and 90s). The first season of Maude is now out on DVD. On stage, Arthur was Lucy Brown in the 1954 Off-Broadway revival of Kurt Weill's The Threepenny Opera, and was Yente the Matchmaker in the 1964 Broadway premiere of Fiddler on the Roof.
