On one side, there are increased demands to censor hateful, disrespectful, and bullying expression and to ensure an inclusive and nondiscriminatory learning environment. Rather, US law allows government to punish hateful or discriminatory speech in specific contexts when it directly causes imminent serious harm.

Higher education must foster and protect open dialogue
