Christmas has often been the time for ghouls, ghosts, and stories by the crackling fire. Father Christmas has even had his evil twins like Krampus dealing out punishment for the children who misbehave all year round. However, there is a Christmas legend of a different kind who deals out punishment during the festive period: Frau Perchta, the Christmas belly-slitter.
This book looks at the legend of the festive spectre who is famous for her punishments but could also reward the well behaved. Festivals in her honor continue to this day in the Alpine regions throughout Christmas.
